BROOKLYN, N.Y. / Throughout his decorated and celebrated business career, New York entrepreneur Robert Toussie has made it a point to give back both to his community and to deserving charities and non-profits around the world. He has managed to strike a delicate balance between successful corporate investing and prolific philanthropy, but perhaps none of his charitable causes resonated so personally with him as his now decade-long relationship with the New York City Patrolmen’s Benevolence Association (NYCPBA).
Just more than ten years ago, Robert Toussie was moved by a New York tragedy that claimed the life of a local police officer. Since then, he has made significant donations of both his time and money to provide aid for the families of officers who lose their lives in the line of duty.
All this as Robert Toussie also continues to demonstrate why he is one of the most successful businessmen in New York. Since the mid 1980s, the celebrated entrepreneur has made several corporate investments that have topped the prestigious $100 million mark to a wide array of American companies, drawing praise and attention from venerated business publications like ‘The Wall Street Journal,’ ‘Forbes’ and ‘The New York Times.’
Blending business with ‘benevolence’
On July 17th, 2000, New York City Police Officer John Kelly became the latest addition to the NYCPBA’s roster of heroes who have fallen in the line of duty after the car he was driving struck a utility pole while he was in pursuit of a fugitive on a motorcycle. When Robert Toussie learned about the loss of one of his community’s finest, he decided to do something about it.
The dedicated philanthropist made a sizable donation to the NYCPBA Widow and Children’s Fund to ensure the families of these brave heroes are taken care of. For the last ten years, Robert Toussie’s generous financial support and donations of his time and resources have helped countless families receive the support they need at such a difficult and tragic time.
This philanthropic and charitable work has come amidst a period of remarkable business success that has seen Robert Toussie cement his status as one of the wisest corporate investors in the country with a series of $100+ million investments stretching back to the 1980s. Using his time-tested system of investing in stable companies suffering from temporary, yet ultimately curable problems, he led a group of investors in targeting companies like the Heck’s department store chain, the Zondervan Corp. Bible publishing firm and even the Lionel toy company.
Robert Toussie promotes diverse philanthropy
These nine-figure corporate investments may have grabbed headlines, but Robert Toussie’s philanthropy career has been no less prolific. In addition to his work with the NYCPBA, he has also made sizable donations to some of the best hospitals in New York, including the NYU School of Medicine and the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College at Cornell University. He has also worked extensively with schools in and around the New York area, as well as organizations of religious peace both here in the United States and around the world.
This commitment to charitable acts is something he has passed on to younger generations of his family as well. His son, Isaac Toussie, has helped continue his father’s charitable relationships, and has also forged new philanthropic associations with a diverse network of non-profits and charities of his own. He has worked with several charities who have helped the sick, blind and poor across the country, and it has been documented that thousands of people have benefited from his medical contributions. Lives have been saved, suffering has been diminished, and illnesses have been treated and, in some cases, even cured.
About Robert Toussie: For several decades, Robert Toussie was known as one of the most successful businessmen in New York. That reputation has changed somewhat over the last twenty years as his philanthropic endeavors have garnered more acclaim than his financial dealings. Toussie has been in business for nearly sixty years, and in doing so, has earned a reputation as one of the keenest corporate acquisition minds of his time. He has invested in, among others, real estate, department store chains, bible companies, food manufacturers and toy store chains. He has supported hospitals, medical research, food banks, organizations of religious peace, military organizations and homeless charities. He has been married for forty years, and has four children and six grandchildren.
About Isaac Toussie: One of the youngest entrepreneurial success stories in New York, Isaac Toussie has continued his family’s mission to give back to its community by helping those in need improve their quality of life. Success has followed the younger Toussie from an early age. He received the Finance Award at NYU in both his junior and senior years, and went on to receive his Masters in Business Administration from the NYU Stern School of Business at the age of 21 making him one of the youngest MBAs the school ever produced. He routinely helps the blind, widows, orphans and paraplegics with both his money and his time, and has helped thousands of needy members of his fellow community through dozens of charitable contributions over the last twenty years.
