BROOKLYN, N.Y. / Robert Toussie has lived the ‘American Dream.’ His business career began when he was just five years old, as he began selling candy on Bay Parkway in Brooklyn. Through his childhood, he would move from candy to amusement park tickets to newspapers and ultimately to clothing and apparel. The fruits of his nearly life-long labor of entrepreneurial love are a U.S. capitalism success story.
It’s no surprise, then, that he has stayed true to his country. Throughout his career, Robert Toussie has made repeated corporate investments of more than $100 million in American companies and has donated millions of dollars out of his personal fortune to domestic charities, including Operation Uplink, a free phone call program from the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Keeping investments, donations domestic
Several of Robert Toussie’s corporate investments have grabbed headlines over the years, especially those that topped the impressive $100 million mark in the 1980s. The New York business mogul targeted companies that helped diversify his investment portfolio and that could benefit from a fresh injection of capital and a change in philosophy.
This included American companies like Zondervan Corp., one of the biggest publishers of the Bible in the world, the Lionel Toy company, makers of model train sets and an American children’s toy institution, and Heck’s department store, a discount chain based in West Virginia with stores in several states. Robert Toussie led a group of investors who would make the financial investment required to turn around these stables American businesses that were suffering from infinitely solvable problems.
Through his donations to Operation Uplink, Robert Toussie has helped countless American military members serving their countries overseas, both in combat areas and support areas, keep in touch with their family and friends here in the United States. Created by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1996, the program estimates to it has facilitated more than three million free phone calls for a total of 37 million minutes in free talk time.
Operation Uplink originally offered free calling cards, but through support like that from Robert Toussie, it began offering entire days called “Free Call Days” in 2006. Now, deployed service members get free calls for an entire day, at least one day a month.
Robert Toussie emphasizes civic responsibility
As with anything in life, Robert Toussie has long viewed his business career as a lesson in balance. Too much of anything can lead to misplaced priorities, and he knew it was his responsibility to give back to not only his community, but to communities around the country. This commitment to improving the quality of life of the less fortunate is something he says has made him a more complete businessman and entrepreneur today.
This commitment to charitable acts is something he has passed on to younger generations of his family as well. His son, Isaac Toussie, has helped continue his father’s charitable relationships, and has also forged new philanthropic associations with a diverse network of non-profits and charities of his own. He has worked with several charities who have helped the sick, blind and poor across the country, and it has been documented that thousands of people have benefited from his medical contributions. Lives have been saved, suffering has been diminished, and illnesses have been treated and, in some cases, even cured.
About Robert Toussie: For several decades, Robert Toussie was known as one of the most successful businessmen in New York. That reputation has changed somewhat over the last twenty years as his philanthropic endeavors have garnered more acclaim than his financial dealings. Toussie has been in business for nearly sixty years, and in doing so, has earned a reputation as one of the keenest corporate acquisition minds of his time. He has invested in, among others, real estate, department store chains, bible companies, food manufacturers and toy store chains. He has supported hospitals, medical research, food banks, organizations of religious peace, military organizations and homeless charities. He has been married for forty years, and has four children and six grandchildren.
About Isaac Toussie: One of the youngest entrepreneurial success stories in New York, Isaac Toussie has continued his family’s mission to give back to its community by helping those in need improve their quality of life. Success has followed the younger Toussie from an early age. He received the Finance Award at NYU in both his junior and senior years, and went on to receive his Masters in Business Administration from the NYU Stern School of Business at the age of 21 making him one of the youngest MBAs the school ever produced. He routinely helps the blind, widows, orphans and paraplegics with both his money and his time, and has helped thousands of needy members of his fellow community through dozens of charitable contributions over the last twenty years.
