Orlando, Fla. / Family practitioner Stephanie Haridopolos, MD, warns women 40 and older of waiting too long to get mammograms in the current issue of GLADYS magazine.
Haridopolos wrote a medical feature for GLADYS magazine's Spring 2010 issue, in which she disagrees with the recent U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommendation of starting mammography at age 50.
"They are wrong," writes Haridopolos. "It is currently recommended by most professional organizations that breast cancer mammography start at age 40 and self breast exams done monthly."
The American Cancer Society is one of several agencies that maintains women should undergo mammographies when they turn 40. Haridopolos advises women whose family history includes breast cancer start their exams prior to turning 40.
She writes in GLADYS Magazine:
"In this increasingly busy world most women do not focus enough on their own well being and that comes with great harm. A consistent, healthy diet and exercise program can do wonders. You don’t have to be in the gym everyday, but walking 3-4 times a week can make a real difference for your physical and mental well being. You owe it to yourself to take an active role in your healthcare.
"This article is designed to quickly educate the busy woman on the preventative medicine measures regardless of your age. Receiving regular check ups, screening tests, and immunizations are among the most important things you can do for yourself. You can become a partner with your own doctor to decide when you need screenings and immunizations. These are meant to be used as basic guidelines. Specifics should be discussed with your healthcare provider to personalize the timing of each test and immunizations to meet your needs."
