Melbourne, Fla. / Touched by images and stories coming out of Haiti, Dr. Stephanie Haridopolos says she had to do something. As a family physician, and as a mother and wife, it was seeing so many families impacted that broke her heart.
“This horrible disaster has devastated millions of people, especially the children of Haiti,” says Haridopolos.
Dr. Haridopolos has been busy collecting donations to help the victims of last month’s earthquake. Now, the organizers of Brevard County’s India Fest have offered to help.
“There will be a raffle for a trip to India and Caribbean cruise held during India Fest,” says Dr. Haridopolos. “All the money raised from raffle ticket sales will go to help the Ruuska Village Orphanage in Haiti.”
Raffle tickets will be sold throughout the two day India Fest event. Tickets for the India trip and Caribbean cruise raffle are $10. The drawing will be held at 4 p.m on Sunday. The winning tickets will be chosen by Lensa, a four-year-old Haitian girl being adopted by a Brevard county family.
India Fest chairwoman Nina Gadodia contacted Dr. Haridopolos after learning about her missionary work to help Haiti earthquake victims. “The India Fest committee knew they wanted to donate money to the Haiti recovery efforts, they just weren’t sure what organization to choose,” says Dr. Haridopolos. “I put them in touch with Reach Out To Haiti, which has already placed 700 children in the Ruuska Village Orphanage. But there are so many more orphans that need homes.”
There are an estimated 350,000 orphans in Haiti, and that number is expected to grow as the earthquake recovery process continues. The Ruuska Village Orphanage is right on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. Many of the children have been sleeping outdoors because their building was deemed unsafe. The money raised during India Fest will help rebuild the orphanage and provide much needed supplies.
