CHICAGO / The following is a statement from former Ill. Gov. Rod Blagojevich on the income tax increase pushed by Gov. Pat Quinn, which passed the Illinois House last night:
"It's a rotten thing to do to people when you nearly double their taxes at a time when most families are struggling to keep their heads above water much less even try to get ahead. Yet Gov. Quinn is about to sign the biggest tax increase in Illinois history. It will only make things harder on the very people who just elected him. This is wrong.
"A whopping tax increase will not only hurt families, but it will also hurt businesses. It will drive jobs out of Illinois and delay an economic recovery in our state. And it's not necessary.
"For every year I was governor, I balanced the state budget without raising taxes. He can do it too.
"It's a shame Gov. Quinn is making the people of Illinois pay a lot more when there other ways to balance the budget.
"I hope that Gov. Quinn will realize that this is a huge mistake, change course and veto any income tax increase. But if he goes through with it, I'll do whatever I can to help roll it back."
