Rod Blagojevich responds to hung jury verdict, condemns prosecutor on single conviction

Former Illinois governor speaks out on guilty count of lying to federal authorities in 2005.

(PR NewsChannel) / August 17, 2010 / CHICAGO / During a brief press conference this afternoon, former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich told reporters he would fight the single criminal charge of which jurors convicted him.

"Patti and I are going to continue to fight, because this fight is a lot bigger than just me," Blagojevich said an hour after the judge declared a mistrial on 23 of the 24 charges the politician faced.

The jury, which deliberated for 14 days, convicted Blagojevich of lying to federal agents in 2005, three years prior to his arrest. The Democrat called it "one nebulous charge from years ago."

"I want the people of Illinois to know I did not lie to the FBI. I've told the truth from the very beginning. This is a persecution. We have a prosecutor who wants to spend tens of millions of the taxpayers’ money. Most people say you can’t fight city hall…they threw everything they could at me, and the government did not prove its case," Blagojevich said.

His publicist, Glenn Selig, said Blagojevich will not be granting interviews tonight (Tuesday evening).
