Washington, D.C. / Dave Devries, principal director, office of the CIO, OSD-NII/CIO, Defense spoke today about the future of information sharing during a keynote address at the Government Technology Research Alliance council meeting titled “Using Architectures, Governance, and Technology While Managing Risk."
Devries shared the Department of Defense’s strategy to continue to grow information sharing initiatives without compromising the security of DoD's sensitive information. "We need to create an information sharing advantage for our people and mission partners," Devries said. "It's all about access, sharing and collaborative environments."
Various government-wide initiatives such as the Open Government Directive, Transparency and increased use of Social Media have pushed agencies to increase the types and amount of information/data they share with other government agencies as well as the non-government community.
Increased threats from organized crime syndicates and nations such as China who are actively targeting the US to collect sensitive information have increased concern among federal IT leaders at the need to ensure the security of all government information sharing activities.
During the executive panel called "Secure Information Sharing: How to Share Information that is Close to Government," executives including John Teeter, deputy CIO, HHS, Donna Roy, acting chief architect, DHS, Ira Grossman, chief enterprise architect, FEMA and Patricia Craighill, assistant director of defense, USAF,SAF/XC NextGen brainstormed and shared strategies, success stories and technologies aimed at how agencies can successfully share information while maintaining integrity, notably by using technologies such as advanced identity and access management.
When discussing how transparency technologies such as social networking and web 2.0, Teeter pointed out that “transparency as a concept is not new, it is the medium which is new and it is drawing attention to security concerns for sharing of information,” he said.
"Agencies are being pushed harder to share information for the greater good of the country - an end result no one will argue with," said Parham Eftekhari, director of research, GTRA. "An open and honest discussion about what information can be shared is critical as well as determining who should have access to the data and how to build the infrastructure to deliver it between all interested parties. It's all about the data and how to keep it safe."
