Columbia, Mo. / A Reynolds Journalism Institute panel at the Missouri School of Journalism will discuss free press issues in North America on Tuesday. The following is a media advisory with details of the event:
WHAT: The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) will hold an interactive panel discussion and webinar titled “The Erosion of Press Freedom in North America."
"Freedom of the Press remains strong in this country but it must be preserved against attacks from many who want to see it controlled," said Stuart Loory, co-chair of International Press Institute's (IPI) North American committee. "The International Press Institute – a worldwide stalwart in campaigning for press freedom and the safety of journalists for 60 years – is intent on doing what it can to protect journalism in North America from corruption, compromise and censorship, issues that will be emphasized in the webinar."
WHO: Joining RJI in the effort: IPI, the National Freedom of Information Coalition, and the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
The panelists include:
• Lucy Dalglish, executive director, Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press
• Toni Locy, former USA TODAY reporter charged with contempt for failing to disclose the identity of sources, currently Donald W. Reynolds Professor of Legal Reporting at Washington & Lee University.
• Philip Gailey, editor of editorials, St. Petersburg Times
• Stuart Loory, Lee Hills Chair in Free-Press Studies at the Missouri School of Journalism
• Milton Coleman, deputy managing editor, The Washington Post
• Charles Davis, executive director, National Freedom of Information Coalition (NFOIC)
