'I Did Have to Deal with a Wardrobe Malfunction'
Michael Phelps on his one mishap in Beijing.
nbcsports.com - August 18, 2008
(PRNewsChannel) / Beijing, China - NBC's primetime coverage of the 2008 Beijing Games continued Sunday with the men's gymnastics individual gold medal finals in floor and pommel horse and women's individual gold medal finals in floor and vault. In track & field, the women's 100m gold medal final crowned the "fastest woman in the world."
Also, NBC primetime host Bob Costas conducted an in-studio interview with Michael Phelps, his mom Debbie and his coach Bob Bowman.
Below are highlights from NBC's primetime coverage:
COSTAS ON THE USA WOMEN'S ROWING TEAM'S REACTION TO WINNING GOLD: "This is one of the fundamental things of the Olympic Games. In the vast, vast majority of sports, there is no attention, there is no glamour in the four years leading up to the Olympics, there's only solitary dedication. And in this case, not completely solitary, but just that handful of your teammates. That's who you're in it with. And then there's a moment like this. Those are true Olympians right there."
NBC OLYMPIC CORRESPONDENT CRIS COLLINSWORTH ON ALICIA SACRAMONE: "This girl is really, really special. Sometimes in sports it's just not going to be your day. But you have to get up, and you have to be willing to try again and I think that's what makes Alicia special.
"I think every parent out there that has ever seen their child have a tough moment is thinking, 'what can I possibly do for you?'"
COLLINSWORTH TO SARCRAMONE DURING INTERVIEW: "You know, I was a guy that lost two Super Bowls. I had two chances and lost them both, so I totally understand. A lot of people watching the other night wanted to give you a hug."
BELA KAROLYI IN-STUDIO WITH COSTAS ON JUDGING IN WOMEN'S VAULT:
"I believe it was a total rip off and my heart is breaking for this girl. I am talking about Alicia Sacramone. How can you do this? How can you do this? I've never seen something similar happen in an Olympic final. There is no excuse for this. You can't rip out a heart of a young athlete. She deserves to be on the medal podium."
HIGHLIGHTS FROM COSTAS' IN-STUDIO INTERVIEW WITH PHELPS, DEBBIE PHELPS AND BOWMAN:
PHELPS ON JASON LEZAK: "When he went in, we were like, all right, this is going to be a good race. I remember seeing him at the 50 and being like, oh my gosh. Wow. I definitely didn't expect (Alain) Bernard to be that far ahead. I had no idea what to expect. It was the final 15 (meters) when it really got exciting for Garrett (Weber-Gale) and I. We were going absolutely crazy behind the blocks."
PHELPS ON SWIMMING THE 200 METER BUTTERFLY WITH MALFUNCTIONING GOGGLES: "This is probably about the only race I could really change from this Olympics. Every other one was perfect. I definitely don't think I can complain too much. It was a world record and a gold medal. I did have to deal with a wardrobe malfunction."
PHELPS ON HIS REACTION AFTER HIS TEAM WON THE 4X100 METER MEDLEY RELAY: "We had a little huddle and I sort of just started to kind of tear up a little bit."
PHELPS ON TAKING A BREAK FROM TRAINING: "I'll probably do some things on my own. Not sure how much, not sure how often. But I'll do something to stay in the loop."
BOWMAN ON HOW PHELPS FINISHED THE 200 METER BUTTERFLY: "What Michael did wasn't good either, to take that half stroke. He'll tell you, you want to have that perfect finish, but it just so happened, when Michael had the great acceleration at the half stroke, I think that helped him a lot."
DEBBIE PHELPS ON THE 100 METER BUTTERFLY: "I thanked God for his long fingers as he touched the wall."
DEBBIE PHELPS, ON HER RELATIONSHIP WITH MICHAEL: "We always work as a team and we always talk things out. Decisions are made, problems are solved. I can be nothing be proud of him."
PHELPS ON HIS NEW FOUND FAME:
"I actually just got Cal Ripken's autograph. One of my friends game me a 2,131 S.I. cover signed."
Costas: "I've got a feeling that next week you'll have your own S.I. cover you can sign for him if you'd like to."
