(PRNewsChannel) / Miamisburg, Ohio - Teradata today congratulated its customer, BNSF Railway Company, for being recognized as the 2008 “21st Century Achievement Award” winner for the successful implementation of a locomotive fuel-saving program that cut consumption by 1.5 percent in specific regions. The program is projected to deliver a full 1 percent increase in efficiency after complete implementation. In 2007, BNSF used more than 1.4 billion gallons of fuel. The award was given by Computerworld magazine at a ceremony June 2 in Washington DC.
A subsidiary of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (NYSE:BNI), BNSF Railway Company operates one of the largest North American rail networks, with about 32,000 route miles in 28 states and two Canadian provinces. BNSF's Fuel MVP Program rewards locomotive engineers using fuel-efficient train handling practices and measures their performance with a fuel-efficiency scorecard.
“By rewarding increased fuel efficiency, BNSF is creating an environment in which engineers strive for peak fuel conservation performance each month, with positive effects on both the BNSF bottom line and the global environment,” said Jeff McIntyre, assistant vice president, Technology Services, BNSF. “We are using technology to gain valuable insight to alter what happens in the future, rather than just looking at what has happened in the past. Because BNSF already had in place the means for collecting the information and, in many cases, the actual data needed to perform the analyses, the IT department was able to complete the Fuel MVP project in three months.”
The critical component of the program is the BNSF Enterprise Data Warehouse from Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the world’s largest company solely focused on enterprise data warehousing and enterprise analytics. The data warehouse provides the extensive infrastructure required to collect, organize, and analyze data from BNSF locomotives, making the Fuel MVP program technically possible. Fuel consumption information is gathered at wireless download base stations from passing trains’ onboard computers, loaded into the EDW, and the resulting efficiency scorecards are displayed online.
“The BNSF Fuel MVP Program scorecard is like no other in the railway industry. BNSF can change the course of its business based on complex business analytics and near real time information. Further, BNSF is creating an environment in which engineers are rewarded for striving for peak fuel conservation performance, with positive effects on both the BNSF bottom line and the global environment,” said Darryl McDonald, chief marketing officer, Teradata.
