In Tampa Bay, there’s a housing boom being caused by homeowners who no longer feel safe in their older homes, mobile homes.

(PRNewsChannel) / Tampa, Fla. – As the hurricane season fast approaches, Christine Getchell counts down the days until her new home is complete.
“I can’t wait for it to be done. I want to be in it before hurricane season,” Getchell says.
Getchell is among a growing number of Tampa Bay residents who’ve opted to knock down their paid-off older homes or mobile homes to erect new homes that meet tougher hurricane and construction standards.
All State Homes, a Tampa-area builder that specializes in constructing homes on home sites, says a bulk of its business is families living in mobile home or aging homes who want to upgrade to a new home.
“They want to feel safer,” says Bo Fretto, vice president of construction for All State Homes.
Fretto says during this sluggish housing market, this is one sector that has seen some growth.
“These are families that have been saving money and with the equity they’ve built up on the land value, they’re able to afford to build at a time when most families cannot,” says Fretto.
Getchell rented a home next door so she can watch as her new home goes up. It’s about 30 days from being done and, if all goes as planned, she’ll be living in it when hurricane season starts.
“I can’t wait to move in,” says Getchell, “for the first time in years I will feel safe even during hurricane season.”
