Licensed Aesthetician, Nurse Oncologist Create New Int’l Certification for Massaging Cancer Patients

Citing medical research and anecdotal evidence, the specialists say touch can help cancer patients feel good inside and out.

(PRNewsChannel) / Vancouver, B.C. – Advocating that touch can help cancer patients feel better inside and out, a nurse oncologist from the U.S. and a licensed aesthetician from Canada have created the first certification to safely treat cancer patients using therapeutic massage during skin therapies.

Advocating any type of massage for cancer patients is a departure from what for years has been conventional wisdom:  that massage could help spread the cancer and could hurt patients. Therapists, in fact, were advised to refuse treating cancer patients.

“That’s now perceived as a myth,” says Roxanne Parker, a Registered Nurse who works with cancer patients in Phoenix.  “Many doctors now agree with safe and proper technique, patients with cancer can benefit from modified skin therapies and gentle touch through massage, always keeping in mind the safety of the patient”.

Parker says she's seen the many side effects to chemotherapy and radiation, such as pain and severe nausea, but "with proper technique, as taught in Oncology Aesthetics, we can help reduce stress and anxiety which can amplify pain and nausea.”

She has teamed with Morag Currin, a licensed aesthetician and advanced education trainer who owned her own skincare clinic, to create Touch for Cancer.

Currin cautions therapists to be aware of specific skin issues and sensitivities of cancer patients and to use proper creams and lotions that are safe to use.  She says with additional training and education, licensed aestheticians can learn to provide safe skin therapy – which is what the certification she has developed is all about.

The new certification is available to licensed aestheticians and enables them to serve another client population.

“New relationships are being created between physicians and therapists.  A greater respect for complementary therapies through the healing arts is being recognized more and more by the medical field”, says Currin.
