Childhelp® to host National Day of Hope legislative
luncheon in Washington, D.C.
WHAT: Childhelp National Day of Hope® Luncheon
In 1980, Childhelp founders and Nobel Peace Prize nominees Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson joined President Carter in the Oval Office as he signed a federal proclamation designating the month of April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Continuing its tradition of recognizing April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Childhelp National Day of Hope Luncheon provides the opportunity for members of Congress to meet with the Childhelp founders, as well as other prominent activists, to discuss the on-going issue of child abuse in America and discuss new developments in the treatment and prevention of child abuse and advocacy efforts on behalf of its victims.
Each year at the luncheon, Childhelp announces a new initiative that they will be directing resources toward. This year Childhelp will announce their partnership with the meth awareness campaign Crystal Darkness. A high correlation has been documented between meth use and child abuse and Childhelp will be taking a leading role in raising awareness to this issue.
Childhelp Celebrity Ambassadors and TV/Movie stars Casper Van Dien, Catherine Oxenberg and Rick Schroder will be in attendance at the luncheon.
ABC News anchor Rebecca Cooper will be this year’s emcee.
Co-Chairs of the Luncheon are Senator & Mrs. Jon Kyl and Senator and Mrs. Chris Dodd.
Honorary Co-Chairs include Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Senator Norm Coleman, Senator Frank Lautenberg, Congressman John Shadegg and Congressman Ed Pastor.
WHEN: Wednesday, April 9th at Noon
WHERE: U.S. Capitol Complex, Russell Senate Caucus Room in Washington, D.C.
WHO: CEO and Co-Founder Sara O’Meara and President and Co-Founder Yvonne Fedderson started Childhelp in 1959, establishing it as a leading national non-profit organization dedicated to helping victims of child abuse and neglect and at-risk children. Childhelp’s approach focuses on advocacy, prevention, treatment and community outreach.
The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline, 1-800-4-A-CHILD®, operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and receives calls from throughout the United States, Canada, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Guam. Childhelp’s programs and services also include residential treatment services; children’s advocacy centers; therapeutic foster care; group homes and child abuse prevention, education and training. Childhelp also created the National Day of Hope®, held each April during National Child Abuse Prevention Month, that mobilizes people across America to join the fight against child abuse.
