The Write Connection Improves Reading, Writing Scores by Enhancing State Mandated Curriculum
Created and developed by a former teacher, The Write Connection has a perfect track record improving scores.

(PRNewsChannel) / Los Angeles, Calif. – When elementary teacher Deborah Stephenson’s predominantly Hispanic class in the inner city failed to perform well on California state tests despite her most valiant attempts, she found herself frustrated.
She figured there had to be a way to combine effective teaching strategies with state standards, frameworks, and content areas to create a writing system that actually worked for children—even if they were new to the English language.
But that was 10 years ago when no such a program existed. Today it does because Stephenson devised it.
The Write Connection now is in schools across California. And in every one of those schools, scores improved dramatically.
“The program places a focus on writing,” says Stephenson. “Most state programs generally focus too much on reading.”
Conventional wisdom would tell educators that the public school in Beverly Hills would perpetually outperform a school in, let’s say, Compton, which is largely Hispanic and low-income. At Bursch Elementary, until the school started using The Write Connection, state test scores were low. Now test scores at Bursch rival that of their Beverly Hills counterpart.
“My school has been using The Write Connection for nearly three years,” says Abimbola Ajala, Bursch’s principal. “These mastered skills have spilled over into other subject areas. As a result, our scores have increased (and now) are comparable to Beverly Hills USD.”
Stephenson says by developing a program that shifts focus to writing, reading improves as well as writing.
“You can teach kids to read but that doesn't mean they can comprehend,” says Stephenson. “But if you can write, you can definitely comprehend.”
