Cape Coral, Fla. / Many of us have our faces pressed up against the glass today waiting for the economic downfall to stop. It’s a natural occurrence and despite Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s public news release touting that the recession is likely over, it won’t stop raining overnight. Many of us will remain inside watching and waiting to see if and when the clouds will dissipate before we go outside again.
But Chris Goebel, president of TheHomeMag - a national home improvement magazine franchise - isn't waiting any longer. He's ready to make new waves in the rain that continues so he'll be ready to capitalize when the dark economic clouds give way to successful sunshine.
He recounts a story from childhood as inspiration for his beliefs today:
As a young child, I would dread the rain. See, I played baseball quite a bit then and rain was not a friend to us young up-and-comers. Sitting there with my face pressed up against the living room glass watching and waiting for the clouds to clear was part of the process. It was my “woe is me” look. One day, and I remember this vividly, my mother asked if I would like to race her in a game of popsicle sticks. Without a clue as to what she was talking about, she explained. I will attempt to do the same, as well.
We went outside, with raingear of course, and walked to the top of our block with rain pouring down upon us. We lived in the middle of the street which was situated at the bottom of a sizeable hill. Our streets were lined with curbs and gutters to funnel the rain water into storm water receptacles. As it rained, a river flowed in the curb and gutter from the top of the hill to the bottom in a very stream-like manner. So, while standing at the top of our block, raingear on, each of us with a fresh popsicle stick in our hand, we gently knelt down and simultaneously released our popsicle sticks onto the running water.
Well, the next thing you know we’re chasing after those sticks, sloshing in the fallen rain, wet as wet could be. They are no longer just popsicle sticks; these are power boats going almost too fast for us to keep up. As our new boats raced over the rocks and leaves and other debris in the street-side gutter, it was almost as if these two racers were traversing the rapids on their way to some really cool destination. Man, they were quick.
I am proud to say I lost the race that day to a great woman, but I learned a cool new game to play on the days I could not play the game I loved. That fast flowing stream quickly became the heart of hundreds of rainy day races with mom, the rest of the family, and friends. However, I gained much more than that for a lifetime.
You see, I learned that everyone has the ability to find a great new game on a rainy day. All of us have the chance to find new angles when opportunity may not be readily in front of us. It requires us to strap on our raingear and go outside with open eyes, broadened minds, and the desire to find our popsicle race without a fear of getting wet.
The point is this: the recession is over when you say it’s over. It’s over when you stop looking for reasons why not and begin to look for reasons why you can. It’s over when you get up, get out, and get busy creating your next big thing. So much is available today, but it is only available to those that come and get it. And for many, that absolutely means they must leave their comfort zone to do it. If you want change and you want the recession to be over then make it over...for you. And that begins the instant you decide for it to begin.
So here’s my message to all of you that are sitting inside making nose prints on the glass waiting for the sun to dry up the rain: Get up now, go outside, and find your popsicle race. Everyone has one. You just haven’t discovered it, yet.
