While traditional Christian music rarely goes beyond offering praises to God, MaRee’s songs relate God to real-life experiences in the inner-city. 

“I’ve been going to church all my life and have been singing all my life and I wanted my music to relate to everybody not just church folks,” says MaRee.  “Everybody can relate to the music and to the stories the songs tell.”

There are 12 songs on the CD that aim to challenge, uplift and inspire youths. 

“Typical church music is ‘if you don’t get it together you’re going to hell,’” says MaRee. “I want people to recognize there’s a higher power out there.  It’s the Christian message but it doesn’t send you directly to hell if you don’t go to church.”

MaRee, who grew up in Los Angeles, used home-grown talent to make the CD.   Even the recording studio was located in South-Central L.A.  The talent weren’t all clean-cut and even law-abiding.  But it was a very deliberate attempt to make the CD as authentic as possible.

David Johnson, the independent-label record producer whose company is behind the CD, describes the making of it as “magical.” 

“It was just wonderful to watch.  The kids came into the experience rough but many started going to church when we were done,” says Johnson.

MaRee hopes her family-friendly music eventually replaces the Hip Hop tunes currently blaring from car speakers.

“My music has a beat they like and if they listen to the lyrics, they’ll be able to relate,” says MaRee.
