He graduated with his Medical Degree from the La Sapienza University of Rome in Italy. He completed his residency in General Surgery within the same institution, followed by a further residency completed at Hospital of Saint Raphael, Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. Driven to further his knowledge and expertise, Dr. Calcaterra completed his fellowship training in Cardiothoracic Surgery with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida followed by a fellowship in Surgery of the Aorta at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He also holds a PhD from the University of Rome School of Medicine.

Dr. Calcaterra is double board certified by the American Board of Surgery and by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and he is determined to enhance his patients’ quality of life, providing highly specialized and individualized care in order to ensure the most optimal results. With a passion for his work, he has a special expertise in aortic surgery and endovascular aortic repair, cardiac valve surgery, and off-pump coronary bypass surgery. He also has a particular interest in bloodless heart surgery and minimally invasive cardiac operations.

Dr. Calcaterra shares his wealth of knowledge as an Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, and he has earned the coveted titles of Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Calcaterra is a founder member of the Miami Scientific Italian Society (MSIC) and is the author of numerous publications in prominent medical journals. He has presented his work as an invited speaker at important internationally recognized meetings such as the Centennial National Meeting of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) in 2017, the Annual Meeting of the Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS) and the Annual Meeting of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) in 2018.
