Tolentino is an established Ophthalmologist who continues to provide exceptional care and support to his patients as director and founder of the clinical research program within the Center for Retina & Macular Disease in Winter Haven, The Villages, and Lakeland, Florida. He also serves as Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Central Florida, and is the co-founder of Acuity Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Tolentino’s acclaimed career in medicine began in 1993, when he graduated from the University of Massachusetts. Upon earning his Medical Degree, completed his internship at Mount Auburn Hospital and residency in Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Pursuing advanced medical training, before undertaking his Vitreo-Retinal Surgical fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Tolentino completed an additional fellowship in Retina Research at Harvard Medical School. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and maintains a professional membership with the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Association of Ophthalmology, and is a board member of the Association of Filipino Ophthalmologists in America.
Dr. Tolentino is highly regarded for helping develop treatments for wet macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, such as Avastin, Macugen, Lucentis, Eylea, and Verteporfin. He was the first in the world to test Avastin in a model of eye disease 15 years ago. With his wealth of experience and knowledge, Dr. Tolentino engages in international lecturing on anti-angiogenic, retinal and macular therapies, and is developing preventative strategies for delaying macular degeneration with ocular lens pigment/melanin impregnated lenses (True Blue Lenses) and meso zeaxanthin/lutein and zeaxanthin (macuhealth) supplements. He has published over 80 peer reviewed papers and more than 100 publications in the field of anti-angiogenic, retinal, and macular therapies. In his free time, Dr. Tolentino enjoys skiing and Feng Shui.
