Expert Geriatric Psychiatrist, Lauren Tosca Bonner, MD, is to be Recognized as a 2018 Top Doctor in Scottsdale, Arizona

Lauren Tosca Bonner, MD, Adult and Geriatric Psychiatrist has been named a 2018 Top Doctor in Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona. Top Doctor Awards is dedicated to selecting and honoring those healthcare practitioners who have demonstrated clinical excellence while delivering the highest standards of patient care.

Dr. Bonner’s academic excellence was noted early in her career when she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the National Medical Honor Society during medical school at Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine Springfield and Carbondale, Illinois. She graduated with honors from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico where she was named Chief Resident in her 4th Year. It was during her residency training that she was mentored by senior faculty and participated in clinical trials for various pharmacologic treatments including various antipsychotic medications for the treatment of Schizophrenia and Acamprosate for the treatment of Alcohol Dependence.

After Dr. Bonner completed her residency,  she decided to pursue further training and was accepted as a Geriatric Fellow University of Washington, School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry in Seattle, Washington. At the University of Washington, she participated in research, education and mentoring resulting in the publication of articles in various peer reviewed journals and a co-authored chapter in the Textbook of Geriatric Psychiatry, Third Edition, entitled Cognitive Disorders. She was granted an NIMH young investigator award during her time at the University of Washington to investigate the pharmacologic treatment of  agitation in dementia patients. She also participated in clinical trials involving cholinesterase inhibitors and NMDA receptor antagonists for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Dr. Bonner was mentored by both psychiatry and neurology faculty and  became involved in research related to Dementia with Lewy Bodies. She was  chosen to present her research on Dementia with Lewy Bodies at the 8th International Alzheimer’s Disease Scientific Meeting in Stockholm, Sweden.

Dr. Bonner’s academic interests expanded to include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after she noted a number of her geriatric patients suffered from severe symptoms of PTSD. She then became involved in research at the Seattle VA/University of Washington PTSD Research Clinic which resulted in a paper detailing the use of Prazosin for the treatment of PTSD related nightmares..

Dr. Bonner is currently dual board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, in both Psychiatry and in Geriatric Psychiatry.  She currently provides services through her private practice and provides care of seriously mentally ill patients at local agencies in the Phoenix Metro Area.
