Dr. Richard P. Ames’ distinguished career in medicine began in 1958, when he graduated with his Medical Degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Pursuing advanced medical training, he went on to complete his residency at the Boston Medical Center, before undertaking his Nephrology fellowship at the Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital. During his fellowship, he did work to elucidate the role of the renin-angiotensin aldosterone system in human physiology and hypertension. Later on, Dr. Ames tested new drugs for the treatment of hypertension, helping to bring to market such staples of antihypertensive therapy as nifedipine, amlodipine, doxazosin, indapamide, ethacrynic acid, and carvedilol.
Dr. Ames is one of the most experienced nephrologists in the United States, and treats a wide range of kidney related conditions, including hypertension, nephritis, kidney stones, dialysis, nephrotic syndrome, acute kidney failure, and chronic renal disease. He is currently focused strictly on patient-oriented work, but in the past has done research and published more than 40 papers on his findings, and has also published book chapters on topics in hypertension. Dr. Ames has lectured on five continents around the world, including the plenary sessions of the International Society of Hypertension in Paris, and the American Society of Hypertension in New York.
Dr. Ames has dedicated his life to his work, and conducted rounds with the house staff in general medicine and renal medicine at his hospital for 50 years, and held the title of Clinical Professor of Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons for 24 years. It is his wealth of experience, and contributions to his field that makes Dr. Richard P. Ames a very worthy winner of a 2018 Top Doctor Award.
