Michael Merrick, MD, Orthopedist at Azalea Orthopedics, and affiliated with Texas Spine & Joint Hospital, East Texas Medical Center Tyler and CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital, has been named a 2018 Top Doctor in Tyler, Texas. Dr. Michael Merrick has been in practice for more than eight years, and in that time has already become known as one of the top orthopedists in Texas. His achievements began at Rice University where he received a football scholarship to play defensive back for the Owls. He received numerous accolades, including Academic All-American. His acclaimed career in medicine began in 2009 when he graduated from the University of Texas Houston Medical School. Upon earning his Medical Degree, he completed a surgical internship and orthopaedic surgery residency with Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners in Michigan, followed by a fellowship at the Norton Leatherman Spine Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
Dr. Merrick provides surgical and non-surgical treatments for wide range of conditions and injuries, but he is particularly renowned as an expert in surgery of the spine and in minimally invasive spinal procedures. Conditions treated by him include chronic neck and back pain, scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, and spinal stenosis.
Dr. Merrick keeps up to date with the latest advances in orthopedics through his active membership of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, the American Spinal Injury Association, the Texas Medical Association and the Texas Orthopaedic Association. He has authored many medical papers and scientific poster presentations. He has traveled the world presenting research, including international lectures in London and Hong Kong.
Dr. Merrick is married with four children, one boy and three girls, and is also active within his community. He is a member of the South Spring Baptist Church, committee member for Tyler Young Life, a Christian organization for junior high and high school students, and serves as a youth football coach with Impact Sports. Moreover, he serves as Research Director and Compliance Committee Member at Azalea Orthopedics, serves on the Medical Executive Committee at Texas Spine and Joint Hospital, and serves as an Orthopaedic Director at the Texas Spine and Joint Urgent Care Centers in Palestine and Longview.
