After moving to the United States he completed an internship at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital in Hines, Illinois, which was followed by a residency at Loyola University in Chicago.

Dr. Echiverri is dual board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, in Neurology and in Vascular Neurology, and he treats a wide range of conditions in patients across the age spectrum. Conditions treated by him include vertigo, nerve disorders such as chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuritis,  epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and chronic migraine. He is also a noted specialist in pain management and in the treatment of balance disorders.  He now focuses in Stroke Neurology and Multiple Sclerosis, running Edward Neurosciences Institute MS Center, a recognized partners in care of the National MS Society.

Dr. Echiverri is the author of a number of peer reviewed papers on subjects including akinetic mutism and fusiform aneurysm of the vertebrobasilar arterial system.
