Distinguished Pathologist, Dragana Pilavdzic, MD, FRCPC, FCAP, CSPQ, will be Featured in The Leading Physicians of the World

She is a highly trained and qualified physician with an extensive expertise in all facets of her work, especially breast pathology. Dr. Dragana Pilavdzic has been in practice for more than three decades and is currently serving patients within the Department of Pathology at Lakeridge Health in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. She also serves as a Staff Pathologist at the University Health Network in Toronto, and as an Assistant Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Pilavdzic’s acclaimed career in medicine began in 1980, when she graduated with her Medical Degree from the University of Zagreb in Croatia. Following the completion of medical school, she completed an internship at the Medical Center of Slavonska in Pozega, Croatia, before relocating to Canada and serving her residency at the University of Toronto. Pursuing advanced medical training, Dr. Pilavdzic undertook postgraduate training in the Diagnostic Challenges in Breast Pathology under a group of physicians in Siena, Italy. Thereafter, she completed further training in Breast Predictive Factors with the College of American Pathologists, Current Issues and Problems in Breast Pathology with the American Society for Clinical Pathology, and completed courses in the Diagnosis and Management of Breast Disease, and in Breast Pathology Current Concepts and Controversies at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Pilavdzic is internationally renowned as an expert on breast pathology. She has earned the coveted titles of Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, and Fellow of the College of American Pathologists.

To stay current with the latest advances and developments in her field, Dr. Pilavdzic maintains a membership with a number of professional societies and organizations. These include the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the Association of Quebec Pathologists, the Canadian Association of Pathologists, the Canadian Medical Protective Association, the Collège des Médecins du Québec, the College of American Pathologists, The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology. She is also a Founding Member of the Canadian Immunohistochemistry Quality Control, and is the recipient of an Award for Outstanding Leadership and Contribution by the Canadian Association of Pathologists.

Dr. Pilavdzic is also engaged in a substantial amount of creative professional activity. Her first goal was to improve the grossing of breast specimens and improve communication between pathologists and pathologist assistants, and accomplished the introduction of documentation of gross breast tissue using sliced specimen macroscopic annotated images. She also led the movement to adopt breast gross templates very similar to the ones used in England, and has developed an analysis to ensure time for pathology assistants so they can retrieve previous relevant histories, particularly breast imaging findings. Furthermore, she improved processing of the vacuum-assisted needle core biopsy specimens taken for microcalcifications by convincing the radiologists to submit all targeted microcalcifications in the first cassette and leave the remaining tissue in other cassettes. This technique is used in many laboratories and it allows for better examination with less technical support, cutting costs for laboratory.

Furthermore, Dr. Pilavdzic has taken part in committee work, and has also been in active in teaching patients and students about pathology. She is renowned for her innovative and groundbreaking work, and has dedicated her life to providing the best solutions for her patients and community. Dr. Pilavdzic attributes her success to her caring and compassionate attitude, and when she is not working, she enjoys basketball, reading, listening to music, and ballroom dancing.
