GOP lobbyist launches full-throated effort to support Dem bill that bans funding for Civil War monuments on federal land

A bill proposed by two House Democrats that would ban federal funding for Confederate symbols on federal property just won the endorsement from an unlikely source: a top GOP lobbyist.

As the debate continues to rage across the country on Confederate Civil War monuments and symbols and what to do about them, Jack Burkman says to make sure the Dem bill has enough support to pass, he has volunteered his staff of lobbyists from J.M. Burkman & Assoc., the consistently top-performing firm, to promote the House bill among GOP lawmakers.

“These monuments are hurtful and there’s no reason why any federal dollars should be spent on monuments or any Confederate symbols being erected on any federal property,” says Burkman. “You have to take into account the deep-seated, emotional reactions that they elicit in the community.”

The bill, proposed last week by Democratic Reps. Dwight Evans (Pa.) and Adriano Espaillat (N.Y.) following the furor in Charlottesville, Va., would prohibit using federal dollars to display Confederate symbols of any kind on federal property.

Burkman, who’s been a staunch Conservative Republican for 40 years, believes that it’s time to come together as a nation and for some bipartisanship in Washington.

“This can and should be a bipartisan effort and I am pledging to do everything I can to make that the case,” says Burkman.

In the past month, efforts to remove Confederate monuments has reached a fever pitch throughout the country. While cities in Maryland and North Carolina have already removed notable monuments, many cities are still debating the issue.

In addition to his support of the latest bill, Burkman says he’s working on a plan to would address existing monuments that he’s not ready to announce yet.

While most lobbyists keep low profiles, Burkman isn’t afraid to go public to galvanize support for issues.  Most recently, he’s been leading a community effort to find the killers of Democratic National Committee (DNC) staffer Seth Rich.

In addition to suing Washington, D.C. and its police department for access to evidence, he has also pledged $105,000 in reward money for any information that leads to solving the case and even created The Profiling Project, an independent, nonpartisan organization dedicated to finding the truth behind Rich’s killing
