Dr. Joseph D. Babb is a vastly experienced physician who has been in practice for more than four decades. His acclaimed medical career began in 1966 when he graduated from Johns Hopkins University. Upon earning his Medical Degree, he completed an internship and residency in internal medicine from Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Babb then entered the US Army for two years, the first year having served in the medical corps in Vietnam, and the second year at Walter Reed Hospital. He subsequently returned to Massachusetts General Hospital to complete his Cardiology fellowship training.
Following the completion of his fellowship, Dr. Babb became an Assistant Professor of Medicine at The Pennsylvania State University Hershey Medical Center, where he worked as a cardiologist for a decade. While there, he attended a course in angioplasty given in Zurich, Switzerland by Andres Gruentzig, the father of coronary angioplasty. Upon returning to the United States, Dr. Babb performed the first coronary angioplasty at Hershey in 1981.
Dr. Babb is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and he is now renowned as one of North Carolina’s foremost experts in interventional cardiology. He is noted for his expertise in the use of cardiovascular angiography, treating patients of all ages.
Alongside his work at the East Carolina Heart Institute, Dr. Babb also serves as a Professor of Medicine at East Carolina University. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Heart Association, as well as holding the prestigious position of Master of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions. His expertise in this field makes Dr. Joseph D. Babb a very deserving winner of a 2017 Top Doctor Award.
