Popovitz is a highly trained and qualified surgeon with an extensive expertise in all facets of his work, especially arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and arthroscopic surgery of the knee, as well as sports medicine. Dr. Popovitz’s expertise is in minimally invasive repair and/or reconstruction of the shoulder and knee. This includes shoulder labrum, dislocations/bankart and rotator cuff tears. Dr. Popovitz has been in practice for more than 14 years and is currently serving patients within New York Bone & Joint Specialists with locations in both New York and New Jersey. He is also affiliated with Lenox Hill Hospital.
Dr. Popovitz’s career in medicine began in 1994 when he graduated from New York Medical College. Upon receiving his Medical Degree, he completed an internship in general surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital & Medical Center/Level 1 Trauma Center of New York, and served his orthopedic surgery residency at Lenox Hill Hospital. He completed an additional residency at Harvard Children’s Hospital in Boston, before undertaking his fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery at the NYU Hospital for Joint Disease.
Dr. Popovitz is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and has been ranked by the Consumer Research Council of America among the Top Surgeons, Top Orthopedic Surgeons, and Top Physicians since 2004. He has been listed in The New York Times as a SuperDoctor. The distinguished Castle Connolly organization has ranked him as one of the America’s Top Doctors 2017, and 2016. In addition, Leon E. Popovitz, MD has been selected as one of the Top Doctors and Top Orthopedic Surgeons by New York Magazine. He has been honored by The Global Jewish Assistance & Relief Network for his devoted efforts and philanthropic support. Dr. Popovitz has had the honor of being a team physician for the U.S. Open Tennis Championships, and has had privilege of regularly treating professional American athletes, international professional athletes and dancers, competitive American and international collegiate level athletes, and celebrities from around the world.
