She’s been called everything from Reggie Jackson to Kelly Slater, but one thing is for certain when it comes to Booker D. Surfdog… a champion is a champion regardless of the nickname.
While most professional surfers are heading to Mavericks or Pipeline, dog surfing’s bodacious bad girl, who now has the earned elegance of the grande dame of dog surfing, is heading to New Jersey to turn her retirement jacket back into a PawsAboard Life vest and reclaim the title of American’s Surfing Sweetheart.
Returning to the roots of East Coast surfing, the “Kelly Slater of Canines” will be joined by Onyx Shorepound Surfdog to jettison the mirrored flats of Florida for the beach bustin’, boardwalk cruisin, surf cities of the Garden State for the 2017 Old Dogs & New Tricks Surf Tour.
Joining the amazing team from the HEART of SURFING, the dynamic duo is prepped for a summer of love providing free surfing and skateboarding for children with autism and other special needs.
“Booker has been pretty antsy in retirement and we thought that this was a great opportunity for us at Team Surfdog to step up and to stand by those affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder,” says Booker’s “service human” Pops. “Learning and understanding Autism is a major issue in today’s world. Booker D is great on that level, so HEART of SURFING and Booker D. are a perfect fit.”
One of canine surfing’s most famous retirees, Booker D. will be yet another legendary surfer to visit America’s iconic Jersey shores. This year’s July 4th celebration, which has special meaning for Booker because it is Onyx’s birthday, is set to be a highlight of the upcoming tour.
“Onyx and Booker are teaming up to chomp the shore,” says Pops. “The Brevard county surf legends are going to make sure they leave their pawprints all over the Jersey Shore – not unlike recently passed Dick “The Cat” Catri and Ron Dimenna did in another era.”
