He has been in practice for more than three decades and is currently serving patients as Vice Chairman of the ENT Department at Norwell Health, and Professor of Otolaryngology at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. Dr. Shikowitz’s career in medicine began in 1981 when he graduated with his Medical Degree from Ross University School of Medicine in Roseau, Dominican Republic. He then served his internship in general surgery at Maimonides Medical Center, before undertaking his residency in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Dr. Shikowitz is board certified in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, and Facial Cosmetic Surgery, and has earned the coveted title of Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. To stay current in his field, Dr. Shikowitz maintains professional memberships with the American Medical Association, the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the Society for Ear, Nose and Throat Advances in Children, the Long Island Society of Otolaryngology of Head and Neck Surgery, the Association for Research in Otolaryngology, and the American Broncho-Esophagological Association.
Dr. Shikowitz has spoken in many countries, including Australia, England, Germany, Italy, China, Prague and Scotland, and is involved in mission work around the world. He is the first and only doctor on Long Island that performs a new surgical procedure for sleep apnea treatment called Implantable Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation, a device created by Inspire. Inspire Therapy is a breakthrough implantable treatment option for people with obstructive sleep apnea who are unable to get consistent benefit from Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. This system delivers mild stimulation to the hypoglossal nerve which controls a person’s tongue and other key airway muscles. By stimulating these airway muscles, the person’s airway remains open during sleep. Dr. Shikowitz attributes his success to his hard work and innovative surgery and procedures.
