At an undisclosed location in Arlington, Va., The Profiling Project is in its first week at work seeking clues and gathering information. The team here is just beginning the early stages of piecing together what happened to Seth Rich, the DNC staffer mysteriously murdered over the summer.
Who’s picking up the tab for this? A GOP lobbyist and attorney named Jack Burkman, who began taking a special interest in the case several months ago.
The Profiling Project (http://thepublicityagency.com/the-profiling-project/) is a newly created non-partisan and autonomous team of forensic-psychology graduate students, psychologists and former federal/local law enforcement officers/agents who are working to solve the murder of Rich, killed back in July of 2016 and whose murder remains unsolved. Police have no suspects.
“By using various psychological tools and techniques like geographical profiling, victimology and investigative psychology, we hope to provide significant, actionable information and insight that may assist in the arrest and prosecution of Seth’s murderer and give closure to his family,” says Kevin Doherty, a former U.S. Marine and Special Agent/ Criminal Investigator in the intelligence community.
Announced and revealed for the first time at a news conference last week in the neighborhood where Rich lived and was murdered, things are so new here at The Profiling Project in Virginia, the logo is not yet affixed to the door of the office.
Doherty, along with Jennifer Rohrer, Ph.D., a clinical and forensic psychologist who practices in the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, and Virginia, head the unit and oversee a staff of volunteer George Washington University graduate students pursuing a Master’s in Forensic Psychology. All the students are members of The Student Association for Forensic Psychology (SAFP) at George Washington University.

This unit is just the latest in a series of efforts backed entirely by Burkman that are aimed at discovering who killed Seth Rich. Burkman has erected billboards, created a website, flyered the neighborhood, added $105-thousand of his own money to the reward to make it the highest ever offered for a D.C. homicide and written letters to the Congressional Committees appealing to them to add this murder as they investigate Russia’s interference in the election. Russia is blamed for stealing emails from the DNC computers and Rich worked at the DNC.
“I became involved because I wanted to help Seth Rich’s parents find who did this. I couldn’t bring their son back, but if I could at least provide them some answers, well, that I hope would go a long way,” says Jack Burkman, the GOP D.C. lobbyist who is funding this effort, along with other initiatives, all aimed at finding the killer or killers of Seth Rich. “This murder touched the D.C. community, especially the political community like no other. It’s a very strange murder.”
Rich, 27, was in the middle of creating a high-tech voter registration system for the Democratic National Committee, when he was shot in the back while walking home in the Bloomingdale neighborhood in Northwest Washington on Sunday, July 10, 2016.
“I have been a member of this community for nearly 30 years,” adds Burkman. “I am now all-in in helping our D.C. community find out the truth of what happened.”
Though Burkman and his law firm/lobby firm will continue to advocate and work toward to solving this murder under the banner of “The Seth Rich Investigative War Room,” including a re-enactment, The Profiling Project is housed in separate and dedicated space at an undisclosed location in Arlington. It is operating independently from Burkman and is set up to run at all times of day or night.
The Profiling Project also operates independent from the Rich family.
“It is imperative that this unit be completely autonomous,” says Doherty. “It needs to be insinuated from politics, from conspiracy theories and from any pressure to ignore or pursue information that may be unfavorable to political parties or anyone.”
The goal? To find who did it.
“At the very least I expect the profiling team to develop a profile of the person or people who murdered Seth Rich, along with a motive,” says Burkman.
