The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (FMoPA) will host author and artist Kai McBride for an Artist Talk about his work “About Face: Picturing Tampa” on Friday, December 23, 2016 at 6 pm. The 52 works selected for this monograph represent a fascinating point of view of the city of Tampa that is unique to the artist. A photography professor at Columbia, Kai McBride developed this project during a trip to Tampa in the summer of 2007.

The book offers a “dystopian view of a city peopled only by the grinning faces on billboards set against strip malls, stagnant water, and shuttered dreams.” The inception of this project occurred when McBride began to notice and appreciate the eccentric posters of people’s faces plastered on city streets and bus stop against urban backgrounds that are characteristic of Tampa.

FMoPA will hold a reception for Kai McBride on December 23, 2016 from 5-6 pm as a part of the Fourth Friday Initiative. Tickets to this event are Pay As You Choose with a suggested donation of $10, light refreshments will also be served. McBride will also present his book and sell copies of “About Face: Picturing Tampa” from 6-7 pm in the third floor lecture space.

“This is a one of a kind opportunity to discuss urban street photography, with a special focus on Tampa,” says Executive Director, Zora Carrier, PhD, “We appreciate the idea of rediscovering familiar spaces.”
