A Fellow Citizen’s open letter to Mr. Trump

Dear Mr. Trump (not sure what else to call you at this point – and I would imagine you prefer this over President-Elect):

Firstly, I want to congratulate you on winning the election.  Despite the clatter and noise regarding the Electoral College, you did indeed win under the system we have used in this country for centuries.  However, winning the election has now brought with it the responsibility to act as a true leader – a leader, many believe you can effectively be.  You want to make America great again.  Begging the question of whether our country isn’t already great – but we all certainly can strive to be better.

To that end, your name and your brand has become associated, unfortunately, with hatred, bigotry and racism.  I know your name and brand mean very much to you and to see it tarnished under the rubric of hatred must destroy you inside.  I believe, and hopefully it is true – that though the rhetoric of your campaign is awakening a sleeping giant in this country that is pure evil – that was not your intention.  It is the ugliest of what this country is (and what mankind is).

So it is my plead that as you begin to lead this country, you make a firm and calming statement to the citizenry – that you will not tolerate hatred, you will not tolerate bullying, you will not tolerate racism.  This country was founded on diversity of thought and respect for others in all our shapes, sizes, colors, genders, orientations, perspectives, religions.  These fundamental core themes of our country cannot be taken for granted and must be cherished.  The hate-mongers using your name to suppress the voice of those they find different than them cannot be tolerated.   I humbly ask that you record a statement and publish it wherever you see fit (you seem to prefer YouTube and Twitter) denouncing those who spread hatred in your name and assuring the citizens of this amazing country that you will stand for all of us and represent all of our interests as you seek to make this country great.

By the way, as you continue to pick your cabinet and announce your appointments, I would caution you to be careful not to award appointments to the Wall Street elite and those life-long political names that have been surrounding you.   I believe sincerely that you won this election not because you unintentionally gave voice to racism, hatred or fear.  I believe you won because so many people are tired of the political establishment.  This is your chance to stand true to your campaign promise to rid Washington of political elitism.  This is why you won – and you should embrace that.

You are going to make mistakes; and, clearly, everyone is not going to agree with your approach. But how you recover from those mistakes is the most relevant characteristic of a true leader.  Stay focused on what initially motivated you to enter into this race.  I believe your message got sidetracked during the campaign because the focus turned to winning rather than the message.  You now can focus solely on your message.

Good luck and God Bless,

A Fellow Citizen
