On Friday, May 13th, Girls Inc of Pinellas will recognize Dr. Sylvia Thomas as STEM Woman of the Year at the annual STEM Celebration Luncheon at The Club at Treasure Island. The goal of the luncheon is to bring awareness to the community of the need for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education for girls and to showcase the outstanding STEM program at the Girls Inc After School Enrichment Program and Operation SMART Summer Camp. Contributions raised at the Luncheon are critical this year to provide scholarships for 55 girls on the wait list for Summer Camp who will not otherwise be able to attend.
Each year Girls Inc. honors a local role model for her distinguished STEM career and dedication to paving the way for young women of tomorrow. This year’s honoree, Dr. Sylvia W. Thomas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of South Florida. Since joining USF in 2005, Dr. Thomas has been a mentor in various research and teaching settings as Assistant Dean in Engineering and faculty in Electrical Engineering (EE). As a mentor to USF graduate students, she has personally impacted and will impact 45 scholars working towards masters and doctoral degrees, and was selected as the USF 2015 Graduate Mentor of the Year.
Beyond the university, Dr. Thomas reaches out to the community through the Great American Teach In, hosting research tours for middle and high school teachers and students, and constantly engaging students in STEM conversations.
