One City Ministries, created by Mike and Deb Gilbert from Tampa, is all in when it comes to Give Day Tampa Bay, with the hope that it helps the charity raise money to build a school in Uganda and to fund other programs that alleviate human suffering around the world.
The couple sold all their belongings and set out to Uganda eight years ago after their son died from an overdose of oxycodone and alcohol.
“At first, our adventure was a real melding of cultures. There was exasperation, excitement, curiosity, frustration, joy, confusion, moments that have taken our breath away, some moments when we wish we weren’t ‘breathing it all in,’” says Deb Gilbert. “We can’t even imagine not having had the opportunities we’ve had so far; the blessing to meet the people we’ve met; the heartbreaks, the happy moments. It’s been delightful, brilliant, satisfying.”
One City’s mission is to establish model communities that comprehensively remove all the conditions which perpetuate poverty and human suffering. These model communities are designed to be replicated with the goal of spreading hope and transformative teachings to impoverished regions around the world.
Give Day Tampa Bay is a region-wide one-day of giving. It will happen on May 5. It engages the community and grows the philanthropic profile of the region.
One City Ministries created a page on the Give Day Tampa Bay website to make it easy for the community to offer support.
“I hope the Tampa community continues to support our efforts. Tampa One City Ministries battles the systemically-entrenched poverty that exists in developing countries,” says Mike Gilbert. “This poverty is always accompanied by an interconnected web of oppressive conditions that jeopardize life. Though a few of these countries may be experiencing the beginnings of economic stability, the vast majority of their populations are left behind in an extreme state of vulnerability without opportunity or voice. This must change!”
Today One City Ministries has a multitude of life-saving programs. Their latest humanitarian effort: to build a school in Uganda.
One City launched a comprehensive set of coordinated programs to break down the foundations of poverty, replacing them with durable foundations of empowerment and sustainable independence. One City’s unique approach is to holistically address the issues which trap people in poverty. Our programs tackle the problems of nutrition, economics, agricultural practices, social and gender injustices, as well as the spiritual, character, and leadership development of the individual.
