The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (FMoPA) announces a visit from artist Elger Esser to Tampa, Florida.
Elger Esser, a contemporary German photographer, is known for his large-format héliogravures of meditative landscapes. He will visit the Tampa art museum on March 18 to give a lecture about his work and his series Combray, which is featured in the museum’s exhibition, Elger Esser: Combray. The content of Esser’s work primarily focuses on the rural French countryside. The meditative landscapes present the peaceful mood of the serene scenery.
The title Combray is cause for interpretation. “Combray” comes from Marcel Proust’s epochal novel “A la recherche du temps perdu” (1913-27; English title: “In Search of Lost Time”) and names the reconstructed locale of the first-person narrator’s happy childhood. For Proust, this early happiness, this primal scene, is only recovered in and through written recollection – something that thankfully, for those of us of later generations, can be found in and through the viewing of Elger Esser’s work. Esser’s work provides the viewer with a sense of something untouched. The lack of direct contrast within each image forms a shroud of timelessness and nostalgia, which works as a canvas for the viewer’s own projected memories.
The events begin with a cocktail meet and greet with Eller on March 18 starting at 6 p.m. Those interested in attending can purchase tickets in advance for $25. Eller will then give a short lecture starting at7:30 p.m. The lecture is free for museum members and students with a valid ID. Admission for non-members is $10.
