Local 18 - William MorrisonThe International Union of Operating Engineers Local 18 (IUOE Local 18) today released its latest web video highlighting the experience of a World War II veteran and how the union helped put him to work after serving.

The most recent video, released today on the union’s YouTube channel, introduces William Morrison, a 90-year-old vet who survived the beaches of Normandy and returned to his home state of Ohio seeking work.

“I come over here, told them I was an operator and I’d like to join the union,” Morrison says in the 30 second video. “I raised four kids, bought my house.  Some guys had to struggle to do. I had a great life being a union member.”

This video is part of a campaign entitled “Providing… Since 1939.” The campaign, which will include a total of 12 videos, showcases retirees sharing their genuine perspective of the life of a union member in an attempt to educate Ohioans on the controversial Right to Work legislation that has been threatening the working class for the better part of two years.

“The men and women who have fought for our country through history were willing to give their lives for all of us,” says Pat Sink, business manager for Local 18 of the IUOE. “The least we as a union can do is assist in making those lives a little easier to live after they return from such harrowing circumstances.”

Opponents of the Ohio Right to Work effort, also called “Workplace Freedom,” contend that the initiative’s true purpose is to kill unions and worker protections, ultimately leading to a weaker middle class.

By stripping workers of their rights and freedoms, business owners would be free to lower worker pay, reduce worker benefits and ignore worker rights.

Whether Republicans utilize “Paycheck Protection,” “Workplace Freedom,” or other Right to Work tactics, opponents remain dedicated to ensuring the voting public knows the underlying nature behind the GOP’s divisive agenda.
