How’s this for not taking yourself too seriously? Congregation Mekor Shalom, the newest Conservative synagogue in Tampa, announced a “Chelm Auction & Local Art Event” to be held early next month.
Most people will get what an art event is. But what’s a “Chelm” auction?
It’s when “everyone brings a wrapped new or pre-owned/unused item for raucous & festive blind bidding in the Live Auction,” according to the Conservative Tampa synagogue’s flyer posted on its website and on Facebook.
Chelm is a fictional city in Eastern Europe which is a big part of Jewish folklore. It’s known as the city of fools, similar to “Gotham City” in English folklore, Schilda in Germany and Abdera in Greece.
There is no charge to attend the event, which will be held at Congregation Mekor Shalom, 14005-A N. Dale Mabry Hwy. in Tampa, on November 8 at 7:30pm.
“Yes, synagogues are best known for praying, but at Mekor Shalom it’s also about taking time to have fun and enjoy each other’s company,” says Chris Shulman, president of Mekor Shalom. “That’s what this event is all about. At the same time we raise some money for the synagogue!”
Beverages and refreshments will be served.
The Chelm auction will also feature a colorful holiday art sales event, featuring special and custom hand-crafted art, quilts, festive jewelry and Judaica gift items produced by talented local artists, including Gayle of CreatingGayle LLC and Ruth of RuBeads, Inc.
A portion of all sales proceeds will benefit Congregation Mekor Shalom.
