At 78, Bert Burke is not your typical tech guy.
After 30 years as a licensed psychologist and management consultant, Burke made the switch to the tech world in 1992.
“I know what people need and I know what they want,” says the successful inventor who created the gift card. “When you know those two things, that’s half the battle. Now all you need to do is ask yourself, what solves this? For that, you don’t have to be twenty years old, you just have to have the wits about you to know what people want.”
Burke’s gift card idea came to him in his mid-50s, when he was handed change after a purchase and wanted to find a way to save it more effectively.
“I wasn’t much of a coin collector, so to speak, and I know I wasn’t the only one,” Burke states. “So I started asking myself, how can I make this easier to save? I thought, why not put it on a card!”
Now, after the success of the gift card as well as many other ground-breaking financial triumphs, like the RoundUp program seen in banks like Wells Fargo and Bank of America, Burke has a new creation to help consumers save and spend responsibly.
MeMoneys is a mobile saving and budgeting tool designed to help consumers splurge on the purchases they really want. Burke has integrated his previous innovations and positioned them as a one-stop shop for consumers, like saving money on a gift card or rounding up to the nearest dollar and adding to savings.
Much like his other designs, Burke believes MeMoneys is destined to revolutionize consumer saving and spending.
“Just think what a company like Walmart, Target or Amazon could do with this,” exclaimed Bert who is no stranger to seeing his inventions commercialized. “They could help their customers save funds from competing merchants, ultimately to splurge on a big purchase with their own company! People are always motivated by financial incentives; MeMoneys gives companies the tools to help their consumers do so.”
As early as last month, ageism in the tech field became a widely discussed topic after New Republic’s and CNBC contributor Noam Scheiber wrote about it in the publication. This was followed by a segment on Fox Business News with Maria Bartiromo discussing the same topic.
Despite being in an industry where most are less than half his age, Burke does not see it that way.
“In any field you are going to have detractors, especially when you find success. It’s an exciting field to get into, so if you think you have something to contribute, go for it!”
It’s the same field that has made Bert Burke 78 years young.
