PSCUPSCU’s Health Matters employee wellness program has earned the cooperative an invitation to this year’s Healthiest Employers Awards, sponsored by the Tampa Bay Business Journal and Medi-Weight Loss Clinics. The awards celebration luncheon will take place on Thursday, April 3, 2014 when the winner of the Healthiest Employers Award for 2014 will be announced. Health Matters is PSCU’s branded, comprehensive, and incentive-based health and wellness program for employees.

“Support for Health Matters starts with our CEO, Mike Kelly, who is a vocal advocate for employees to get and stay healthy,” said Lynn Heckler, Executive Vice President of Talent at PSCU. “As a self-insured company whose health care costs run below industry standards, we have financial proof that the program pays dividends to both our employees and the bottom line.”

Health Matters promotes physical wellness and smart lifestyle choices at every level, including the important issue of tobacco cessation. PSCU provides the tools, coaching and medical support needed to help employees and the spouses and partners “kick the habit.”

Additionally, the company provides employees with fresh fruit daily at each of PSCU’s four facilities in Florida, Arizona and Michigan. Free wellness sessions that focus on a specific health topic are offered monthly. PSCU also extends health initiatives to employees through weight management classes, fitness boot camps, massage therapy, free flu shots and diabetes testing. The company received the American Heart Association’s Gold Level Award as a Fit-Friendly workplace, which recognizes companies that fulfill criteria such as offering employees physical activity opportunities, increasing healthy eating options at work and promoting a culture of wellness.

“We encourage staff to get up and move away from their desks during the day. It’s not enough to push fitness and health in just the “off” hours. We’ve placed treadmill workstations in several common areas and mapped out walking trails for staff. Our on-campus Fitness Facility offers cardio equipment, strength training machines and instructor-led classes. Use of the facility is free to all employees; remote employees are eligible for reimbursement of their fitness center fees,” said Lynn Heckler.

Health Matters was created to drive employee participation in activities that promote better health and wellness. Initially, employees could earn Health Rewards points that were redeemable for gift cards, merchandise, time-off and an annual $5,000 grand prize.

Today, the program has grown to encompass all the elements of living a healthy lifestyle. The company’s strategy for continually improving the program includes the newly created position of Fitness and Wellness Specialist. This professional works on-site at PSCU St. Petersburg’s headquarters to monitor program participation and implement changes that strengthen the company’s commitment to the ongoing health of its employees. New food service options, a comprehensive Health Matters Resource Guide, and educational electronic messages provide the framework for healthy living and long-term tenure among PSCU employees. PSCU’s goal is to foster a culture of physical wellness through lifestyle choices that are rewarding for employees and their families.
