UkraineIn the second leaked conversation regarding Ukraine in as many months, two top-level diplomats have been recorded discussing a potential bombshell in the crisis in Ukraine.

According to “The Guardian,” the 11-minute conversation between EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton and Estonian foreign minister Urmas Paet details new allegations that the snipers who killed protestors in the Ukrainian capital were not agents of former president Viktor Yanukovych, but rather agents of the opposition forces.

“There is now stronger and stronger understanding that behind the snipers, it was not Yanukovych, but it was somebody from the new coalition,” Paet said during the conversation.

Referencing talks he had with Dr. Olga Bogomolets who treated the sniper victims in Kiev, Paet told Ashton that the doctor believes that both the protestors and the police were shot by the same people.

“And second, what was quite disturbing, was that all the evidence shows that the people who were killed by snipers from both sides, among policemen and then people from the streets, that they were the same snipers killing people from both sides,” said the Estonian foreign minister.

Following the declaration, Paet went on to mention that the new Ukrainian government has heard the evidence, yet has shown no interest in investigating the claims.

“She then also showed me some photos and she said that as a medical doctor she can say that it is the same handwriting, the same type of bullets, and it’s really disturbing that now the new coalition, that they don’t want to investigate what exactly happened,” Paet said on the tape.

The call reportedly took place immediately after Paet’s visit to Kiev on February 25, during the peak of the clashes between pro-EU protestors and security forces.

When reached for comment, the Estonian Foreign Ministry confirmed the authenticity of the leaked conversation. Catherine Ashton has yet to respond to the new revelation.

Following the confirmation, foreign minister Paet called for an independent investigation into the claims and reiterated the belief that Yanukovych was wrongly credited with the snipers’ actions.

“The investigators must find out what really occurred in Kiev. Many people want an independent investigation to be carried out in Ukraine. The people responsible for the crimes committed on the Maidan Square in Kiev must be punishable by law,” said the foreign minister. “And still, people are seriously concerned about the fact that the new coalition is unwilling to investigate what really occurred there. The understanding of that fact that somebody from the new coalition, not Yanukovych, was behind those snipers is becoming more and more strengthened with every passing day.”
