New Jersey State AFL-CIO President Charles WowkanechGender equality and union solidarity are set to take top billing at the New Jersey State AFL-CIO’s 11th annual Women in Leadership Development (WILD) conference which begins March 7.

Workshops at the Conference are designed to produce a new batch of leaders to fight in the war on women. Attendees of the conference, held on March 7-8, 2014 at the Hilton East Brunswick, organized by Laurel Brennan, Secretary-Treasurer of the New Jersey State AFL-CIO, will develop strategies and leadership skills to advance the cause of equality and union solidarity.

Bringing together union women from all over the state and all sectors of the labor movement in an effort to win the war on women’s rights, the WILD conference has earned national attention as the premiere statewide union-women’s leadership conference in the country.

This year’s theme, “The War on Women, Unions Fight Back,” will see more than 200 newly trained and empowered women leaders ready to lead the fight for workplace equality and family issues.

“Despite all our advances, women are still finding themselves fighting for equality in the workplace,” says Laurel Brennan, of the New Jersey State AFL-CIO. “By empowering women to overcome these challenges, the WILD conference grooms women to become our next generation of leaders.”

Understanding that the war on women’s rights takes place in more than just the workplace, this year’s WILD conference is set to educate these women leaders how to become activists on social media, while also working to attract a new generation of union members.

“By placing an emphasis on social media we can ensure that the future leaders of our cause understand how we’re trying to benefit women in the workplace,” said Laurel Brennan. “Through these personal connections we can educate and empower women to make a difference.”

A special focus of this year’s WILD conference will be the issue of earned sick leave, which would have a tremendous impact on working women across the state.

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO is a founding partner of the 256-member Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc. That coalition led last year’s successful statewide campaign to increase New Jersey’s minimum wage, and was recently asked by legislative leadership to take the lead in a new effort for a statewide earned sick leave law.

In addition to Shuler, other keynote speakers include Connecticut State AFL-CIO president Lori Pelletier, and Terry O’Neill, National NOW president.
