Tampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman sat down with WFTS-TV’s Linda Hurtado on Friday, January 10 to discuss the dangers that can occur when skin problems and irritations go without medical attention. During the 5:30 p.m. broadcast of ABC Action News, Hurtado and Forman looked at the many reasons why men are more likely to avoid going to the doctors.
“What I think it is, men are so functional in a way. ‘I get up in the morning. I go to work. I eat dinner. I go to sleep. I repeat,’” Forman told Hurtado. “And I think if you don’t have anything interrupting that regime then you think everything is going to be okay.”
The piece also featured one of Forman’s patients, Tony Whalen, who has a basal cell carcinoma spot on this back. Whalen’s basal cell carcinoma, a cancer that can often be easily removed, has grown to the size of a football or a man’s shoe and is now requiring more extensive treatments than usual.
Finances and a lack of health insurance can also be to blame, according to the ABC Action News piece. But often, doctors, like the Tampa dermatologist, can work with pharmaceutical companies to obtain treatments at affordable rates or even for free.
“No one should ever skip seeking medical attention because of finances or because they are without insurance,” says Forman. “There are options available, from payment plans to low-cost clinics.”
The Tampa dermatologist, who also volunteers his time at the Judeo-Christian Health Clinic, encourages individuals to make regular appointments with their doctors, to be aware of any skin conditions or issues and to not be afraid to ask questions.
