Last week, Hugh Jackman, best known for his role as Wolverine in the “X-Men” movies, posted a photo to his Instagram account, explaining how he recently was diagnosed with skin cancer. Tampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman is supporting Jackman’s advice to fans: get checked out and use sunscreen.
According to multiple reports, the movie star went and got checked out by a doctor after being urged to by his wife. Wearing a bandage over the tip of his nose, Jackman revealed he had a cancerous growth removed from his nose.
“Basal cell carcinoma, which Hugh Jackman was diagnosed with, is the most common form of skin cancer,” says Forman. “With proper sunscreen use and sun safety precautions, you can minimize your risk of developing it.”
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, there are approximately 2.8 million cases of basal cell carcinoma diagnosed in the United States every year. Treatment options can range from removing the tumor and radiation to topical medicine.
In addition to using sunscreen appropriately, Forman also suggests staying out of the sun during the middle of the day, typically 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., when the sun’s rays are the strongest. The Tampa dermatologist also advises that long-sleeved shirts, hats and sunglasses are worn when out in the sun.
“It’s also extremely important to get checked out by a dermatologist at least once a year,” says Forman. “If you find a suspicious looking spot on your skin, make an appointment with your dermatologist as soon as possible.”
