Tampa dermatologist Forman dermatology and skin cancer instituteIt’s well known that sunscreen helps prevent painful sunburn, aging of the skin and even skin cancer. But Tampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman warns consumers that even if they use sunscreen, they could still be making common sunscreen mistakes.

“Applying sunscreen once a day is not enough, especially if you are going to be in the sun,” says the Tampa dermatologist.

Between sweating, swimming and towel drying, applied sunscreen can be washed or rubbed away. Forman suggests applying a layer of sunscreen at least every two hours, and if you have been in the water, you should always reapply sunscreen after.

Another common sunscreen mistake, the Tampa dermatologist says, is relying on old sunscreen to protect you from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Forman says that active ingredients that help protect your skin breakdown over time and that heat can only accelerate the process.

The Tampa dermatologist also encourages consumers to be generous with the amount of sunscreen they are using. Not only is the amount important, but Forman warns to pay close attention to often ignored spots on the body, like the edges of the face, ears and toes.

“In addition to sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and long-sleeved shirts can provide added sun protection,” Forman added.

The Tampa dermatologist strongly encourages the proper sun protective measures in order to minimize the risk of skin cancer and the aging of the skin. Forman also says that individuals should visit their dermatologist at least once a year and be on the lookout for any suspicious moles or skin areas.
