Now in its third year, Famous Women in History Come Alive! has become a tradition at Girls Inc of Pinellas. Every spring, in honor of Women’s History Month, our older girls choose a famous woman in history who has inspired her. Paired with a volunteer Mentor from the community for about an hour a week over 10 weeks, they research that woman, find out what her life was really like, what obstacles she overcame, and why she is important to us today.
Mentors help the girls develop a 5 minute presentation as her chosen Famous Woman which she then delivers in costume and in character to an assembly of Girls Inc members, parents, teachers, and the community. This year’s famous women included Helen Keller, Queen Elizabeth II, Juliet Lowe and many more. The girls gave a fabulous performance on May 23 to an exuberant crowd. “The girls are learning public speaking and leadership skills,” says volunteer Mentor Toni Van Pelt, “and learning they can overcome obstacles in their own lives.”
Mentors enjoy it too. Mentor Anjie Corley says “The girls are STARS!!!! It’s wonderful to see them become increasingly passionate about learning about powerful women. The girls were so receptive, thirsty and responsive for mentoring, inspiration and friendship, and that made being a Mentor for Famous Women in History such a great experience.”
Famous Women in History Come Alive is project-based learning at its best. The girls learn how to do research, about the roles of women in history, and importantly, they learn to be creative in putting their presentation together—it’s the best type of program there is—relevant, fun, creative, educational, and something they and their parents will remember fondly.
For over half a century, Girls Inc has had a profound and life-changing impact for thousands of girls in Pinellas County and is known as the “go-to place” for growing great girls. The Girls Inc After-School Academy and Operation SMART Summer Camp help today’s girls become tomorrow’s leaders by helping them develop the tools to build, and the vision to plan their very best futures.
