After a full day social media education in workshops and sessions on April 23rd, the second day of GSMI’s Social Media Strategy Summit: Chicago kicked off with the morning keynote by Maya Grinberg of Wildfire and went on to include some enlightening case studies and sessions from companies like Dell, Klout, Facebook and many others.
Grinberg, the Chief Evangelist and Social Media Manager from Wildfire, a division of Google, spoke about building as strategy for social marketing success. Going in depth on why social must align with business objectives as well as how to integrate social into the overall marketing mix, one of the key takeaways was the need to create content that people want to share.
Following Grinberg’s keynote, Richard Goldsmith, Social Media Director of R/GA Chicago, hosted a panel of social media experts made up of Katie Brown of the LUNGevity Foundation, John Dick from Klout, Meredith Vailando of DigiTour Media and Lindsay Lewis from Hyatt. The panel of experts had advice and took questions on a wide spectrum of social media issues and platforms. Dick summed up some of the biggest platforms well with his statement “YouTube is for reach. Twitter is for real time. Facebook is like the water cooler after the fact”.
Taking the attendees in Chicago into the lunch break, Liz Brown Bullock, the Social Media Director of Dell led a session that focused on empowering your employees as brand ambassadors to your online customers. Bullock highlighted the importance of having openness within the process as well as identifying and rewarding the small, courageous steps they take to connect with the customer. “You’ve got to have employees that customers want to connect with”, Bullock emphasized.
Going into the afternoon case studies from SAP and Facebook as well as a closing keynote from Shani Higgins, the CEO of Technorati will round out the Chicago installment of the social media education event.
For those who weren’t able to make the event, a quick social media checklist can provide some guidance to social media marketers as well as tide them over until the next installment of the Social Media Strategy Summit when GSMI heads to New York City with SMSS New York this June 12th-13th.
