Tampa dermatologist Forman dermatology and skin cancer instituteTampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman is continuing his quest for safe sun practices, as the warmer months inch closer. With Spring Break right around the corner, Forman is offering his top tips to minimize the risk of skin cancer and damage due to the sun.

“Unprotected skin can be damaged by UV rays in as little as 15 minutes,” says the Tampa dermatologist. “Even if it’s cloudy or cool, or you don’t think you’ll be outside for very long, your skin needs protection.”

Forman recommends wearing a sunscreen that offers both UVA and UVB protection. He also says that the broad-spectrum sunscreen should be applied to all exposed areas and should be reapplied every two hours. He also suggests frequently using a lip balm with SPF.

The Tampa dermatologist proposes sticking with sunscreens labeled SPF 30 as well as protective clothing such as hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved shirts. Forman also urges individuals to stay out of the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are more potent.

“The best thing you can do to protect your skin against sun damage is to be proactive,” says Forman. “It can take up to 12 hours to see the full effect of sun exposure on the skin, and at that point, you can’t completely reverse what’s already been done.”

As for care following sun exposure, Forman says that individuals should visit their dermatologist at least once a year and be on the lookout for any suspicious moles or skin areas.
