In “The Epic of Gilgamesh: The Oldest Documented Story in the History of Humankind” (ISBN 147502407X), writer and graphic designer, Sam Kuraishi gives his own take on the legendary king of Uruk who ruled during its first dynasty. Written for those interested in history and social science, Kuraishi offers a tale full of wisdom, adventure, love and fear.

Gilgamesh was unlike any other with his unparalleled strength, power and beauty. He was both loved and feared, and he had no qualms about exercising all of his rights as a leader who could have anything he wanted, from sleeping with soon-to-be married women to exploiting others’ labor.

In “The Epic of Gilgamesh,” readers follow the powerful leader after the death of his best friend as he struggles through a deep depression. As he fears for his own life, he sets out on a journey to the end of the world in search of the secret to immortality. On his way, he meets Utanapishtim, who was granted eternal life by the gods after escaping the great flood. But Gilgamesh will soon learn that eternal life may not be what he wants after all.

While “The Epic of Gilgamesh” is Kuraishi’s personal adaptation of the legend, he stayed close to original works and scholarly translations. He believes that despite the story being thousands of years old, the themes and problems in the story of Gilgamesh are relatable to modern life.

“The Epic of Gilgamesh: The Oldest Documented Story in the History of Humankind” is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
