School is the last place you would think a child could fall victim to sexual harassment and abuse. But a 2004 Department of Education report estimated that nearly 4.5 million kindergarten through high school-aged students are sexually abused or harassed by an educator. In “Passing the Trash: A Parent’s Guide to Combat Sexual Abuse/Harassment of their Children in School” (ISBN 1478309121), Charles J. Hobson, Ph.D., educates readers about this alarmingly frequent issue while offering them steps to protect their children.

The title of his work, “Passing the Trash,” earned its name from the controversial practice of encouraging sexual offenders to voluntarily resign in exchange for positive letters of reference and not reporting incidents to police or taking any disciplinary actions. As a college professor and decades-long crusader for students’ rights, Hobson believes it as important as ever to address the widespread increase in sexual abuse and harassment cases in elementary, middle and high schools.

While he realizes that “Passing the Trash” may not rid schools of sexual abuse or harassment, he hopes to make more parents aware of the unfortunate situations occurring at their children’s school. Hobson also helps parents remain proactive by offering various tips and strategies to defend their child as well as tips on how to hold the appropriate individuals responsible, if need be.

“‘Passing the Trash’ does not sugar coat this problem or the culprits,” says Hobson. “Accountability rests not only with the sexual predators but also with school administrators, teachers and union officials who enabled the abuse by not reporting it to the law.”
