Central Michigan University (CMU) scored a clear victory on September 8 against Michigan State in an innovative recycling competition between the two schools’ fans who were attending the MSU-CMU football game in Mt. Pleasant.
Beverage containers including water bottles, beer bottles and aluminum cans were collected in fan tailgate and parking areas, using designated containers for each team. Roger Cargill, special events manager for Schupan Recycling, worked with Waste Management and CMU officials to organize and promote the event.
“Nearly two tons of recyclables were collected at the game, with the CMU Chippewas winning the competition,” Cargill reported. “This is a great start to something we hope will spread to other football venues across the state.”
A strong team commitment made the time and effort worthwhile, according to Cargill.
“CMU and Waste Management did a terrific job from day one,” he said. “The CMU athletic department was very supportive, as was the public relations office. We were very proud to have been part of such a great team and community.”
A Central Michigan University spokesman commented, “We were so encouraged by the positive response to this effort and the overall reduction in waste that we hope to make it a regular part of the football season.”
