"Joe's Claim" by Patricia Sanders

In “Joe’s Claim” (ISBN 1477476865), Patricia Sanders uses the Western romance genre to tell a modern-day love story. An easy read with suspense, humor and sizzling love scenes, the story unfolds against the scenic backdrop of the Bar LJ Ranch settled in the Rocky Mountains of Spring Ridge, Mont.

Ownership of Bar LJ Ranch is shared between the three Weston brothers. Ruggedly handsome, all three men are wealthy and have established careers and identities outside of managing cattle. Joe is the oldest of the siblings. After an injury sidelined him from a potential NFL career, he became a veterinarian, running a successful stud-breeding horse program. Hunter, the middle brother and former Marine, serves as town sheriff, while little brother JT heads the Spring Ridge Fire Department.

Joe’s life is about to get complicated with the arrival of Liz Dunlap, an accomplished mystery writer who is running away from her abusive ex-fiancé. Liz is warned to stay away from Joe by a jealous former lover, the real estate agent who sells her a cottage, claiming the man is a womanizer who will shoot at her beloved dog if it comes near his cattle.

When the Weston brothers’ prize bull ends up attacking Liz’s dog in her backyard, Joe runs and grabs the woman to protect her from the charging bull. However he ends up causing her injuries. He stays by Liz’s side at the hospital and even opens his home to allow her to recover, yet he senses that she is hiding something. Liz keeps her distance as well, remembering the warning that all Joe wants is her body.

When lovers from their pasts make a play against the tentative relationship, Joe and Liz will have to learn to trust each other as their very lives may be at stake. A novel of restrained passion that shows how two people can overcome their pasts, “Joe’s Claim” is a Western romance unafraid to tackle modern-day love.
